Epsilon is a musical group founded by a Montréal
musician of Greek heritage Dimosthenis Papadimitriou.
Epsilon is the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet
and is the first letter of the word Ellenes which
means Greek Peoples.
The group was formed in the spring of 2002 with
one purpose in mind. That purpose was to expose
and share with audiences the Greek musical experience
and expression.
Greece is a country with many different regions
and from these regions come different styles of
Greek music. Epsilon covers them all from NISIOTIKA
(music from the Greek isles) to EIPIROTIKA (from
the northern regions) as well as REMBETIKA and
SMIRNAIKA (from Asia Minor), THIMOTIKA (songs
from the mainland mountain regions) and of coarse
the popular style of Greek music LAIKA.
Epsilon's repertoire also includes pieces from
the great composers such as Mikis Theodorakis,
Manos Loizos and Giannis Markopoulos. Epsilons
performances so far have been well received by
all enthusiasts of ethnic music and they have
performed at the popular venue Spectrum de Montréal
as well as the acclaimed Festival Francofolies.
While in performance the group effectively showcases
and emphasizes the traditional instruments of
Greek music. The instrumentation includes the
BOUZOUKI, the BAGLAMA, the OUTI, the CRETEAN LYRA
and VIOLIN also included are the guitar, the bass
guitar, keyboards drums, percussion and vocals.
The members of epsilon are all professional
musicians with live performance experience in
North America and Europe and are actively involved
in composition, studio recordings and the production
areas of the music industry. Epsilon is a music
event and festival favorite sure to entertain
the audience with the energetic and colorful styles
of Greek music.
For commercial performances such as weddings
baptisms Greek community dances and parties the
band also has a huge repertoire of Jazz standards
English pop songs, dance, disco, Latin and retro
styles.
